KIM BREMMER | KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Ag Inspirations
Kim Bremmer grew up on a dairy farm in central Wisconsin and is a mother of two, graduate of UW-Madison and was an on-farm dairy nutrition consultant for almost 15 years. She started Ag Inspirations LLC in 2015 and has been advocating for farmers as a professional speaker, traveling across the country as well as internationally. She is passionate about protecting the use of science, technology, and innovation in how we grow and raise food. Kim is also the Executive Director of Venture Dairy Cooperative, a new third-party milk verification co-op, where she advocates on policy to help protect farmers and promote the future of dairy in Wisconsin. She serves on the executive advisory council for the American Dairy Coalition and the advisory board for Dairy Discovery at Swisslane Farms in Alto, Michigan, is the president of Wisconsin Women for Agriculture, secretary of national American Agri-Women and a regular contributor on Rural Route Radio. Kim also hosts BoviNews, an information resource platform designed for dairy and beef producers to access leading industry experts on topics important to the success of their operations. She is an elected director for her county Farm Bureau and her latest adventure is her election to the local school board.

Maryland Senator, Maryland District 9
Senator Katie Fry Hester represents Maryland’s 9th district including Ellicott City, Western Howard County, and southern Carroll County. Before entering public service in 2018, Sen. Hester spent 20 years working in the private sector to foster sustainable international development, stakeholder engagement, and strategic planning to solve large, complex problems. She has worked with Fortune 500 companies, small businesses, governments, non-profits, and communities to find win-win partnerships. In the General Assembly, she has put these skills to use as Senate Chair of the Joint Committee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Biotechnology, CoChair of the Public Safety & Judicial System Subcommittee of the Governor’s Commission to Study Mental & Behavioral Health, and as a member of the Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee. She has sponsored and passed more than 30 pieces of bipartisan legislation during her first term, including the State’s first comprehensive cybersecurity package, the establishment of the first-in-the-nation revolving loan fund for environmental resiliency projects, to expand mental and behavioral healthcare access for students, and to invest in historic preservation to revitalize communities across Maryland.
Senator Hester graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Agricultural and Biological Engineering and has lived in Western Howard County for 15 years with her husband, Bill, and their two daughters.

Assistant Secretary, Marketing, Animal Industries and Consumer Services, Maryland Department of Agriculture
Cassie Shirk currently serves as Assistant Secretary, Marketing, Animal Industries and Consumer Services at the Maryland Department of Agriculture where she oversees a wide range of programs, including Marketing and Agribusiness Development, Food Quality Assurance, Animal Health, Weights and Measures, Horse Industry Board and the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Previously, she served as the Director of Legislation and Government Affairs, and played a critical role in representing the department during the Maryland General Assembly legislative session.
Shirk joined the department from the Maryland Governor’s Office where she had served as a policy advisor. Previously, she served in the Maryland Governor’s Office as a Policy Advisor to one of the Governor’s Deputy Chief of Staff and a Special Assistant in the Legislative Office to the Chief Legislative Officer. Shirk also worked in the Maryland Governor’s Office for Children as a Legislative Liaison. Before working in Maryland, Ms. Shirk served her home state of Pennsylvania as a Legislative Specialist in the Department of Education and in several other roles within the Pennsylvania Governor’s Office.
Cassie received her bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting and minored in Political Science from Point Park University in Pittsburgh, PA. She resides in Annapolis, MD with her husband and two sons.

Kevin Kinnally is the legislative director at the Maryland Association of Counties. Mr. Kinnally provides primary coverage for tax and fiscal policy, information technology, elections, emergency services, and intergovernmental relations. Kinnally co-hosts the Conduit Street Podcast and serves as the liaison to the Maryland Association of Budget and Finance Officers, the Maryland Association of County Emergency Managers, the Maryland County Information Technology Officers, and the Maryland Association of Election Officials.

On a rainy spring day on the campus of West Virginia University, after a year of watching a commercial construction project rise from the ground, Kellie realized she needed to build something. At the time, she couldn’t guess how the desire would translate into a career. After over 15 years of experience in economic development at the state and local government level, she is grateful to have mapped a course that has allowed her to share in the community growth that comes from a strong, engaged and diverse local economy. Kellie brings the knowledge and perspective from her time at the Jefferson County Development Authority and the Loudoun County Department of Economic Development to her current role with the St. Mary’s County Department of Economic Development. She is thrilled to be a part of a professional, smart, and fun team.

Maureen is the Agricultural Business Coordinator for Cecil County’s Office of Economic Development. She has been in this role for about 4 years. Her background in real estate and business pairs well with her years of on-farm work experience. Though not a farm kid, Maureen found agriculture in her early 20’s and quickly made a career out of her passion. Maureen’s understanding of business and farming is well-balanced. Her passion for agriculture reaches beyond the critical economic role of the industry and encompasses the nutritional and environmental benefits of farming and eating locally.

Originally from Chicago, IL, Gerardo Martinez, is a Naval Academy graduate and former Marine Corps Officer. After his service, he combined his love of the outdoors and passion of rock climbing with his leadership development expertise to form Triple Direct Leadership, an executive development and experiential leadership company. While on assignment in Cameroon, Africa, Gerardo was incredibly moved by the community farm’s ability to provide food for the residents and serve as a dedicated community center. Instead of exchanging monetary capital, they exchanged human interaction — something that was truly priceless.
Now he is the founder of the Maryland International Agriculture Conference and seeks to create a global collaboration around food accessibility, climate awareness and best agricultural practices.
When he’s not working, he’s spending time with his wife and two young children, rock climbing and competing in the Mexican Rodeo (Charreada).

Scott Budden is a Partner at Orchard Point Oyster Co and Eastern Shore native. Together, with his two other business partners and intrepid field crew teams, they have built a national oyster brand from scratch. Scott is a 2007 graduate of Bucknell University and worked as a corporate financial analyst for a decade prior to founding OPOC. He currently serves on the board of the Oyster Recovery Partnership, MD Sea Grant External Advisory Board, CBF/Chesapeake Oyster Alliance Steering Committee, and is the Treasurer for ShoreRivers. He serves at the Governor’s behest on the MD Tidal Fish Advisory Commission and the MD Aquaculture Coordinating Council.

Just a humble Charm City Girl, born and raised on the Westside of Baltimore’s concrete jungle. Combine her crush for the love of wine, bottled with a thirst for learning, aged through a passion for the fermented grape, creating the perfect vintage. Kimberly has been in the wine industry for over a decade and a half in multiple capacities. From volunteer, wine blogger, assisting the winemaker, tasting room associate and (now) winery co-owner. In February 2022, Kimberly took over the role of President of the Maryland Wineries Association. In this new role, Kimberly will speak on behalf of the association as to new and evolving alcohol laws in the State of Maryland.
Kimberly works with local farmers to obtain wine grapes for each of Philosophy’s wines. It’s important to her to showcase Maryland’s vast agricultural roots. She often expresses that great wine can not be made without great grapes. Kimberly’s philosophy, “Wine is my passion and I have finally found my purpose, exploring distinct agriculture (land & soil) and producing high quality wine that highlights diverse grape varietals as unique as Maryland itself”. Wine is a forever evolving theme. With each taste of an unfamiliar varietal, there sparks opportunity.

Luke McFadden grew up in Pasadena, Maryland. Luke is a 26-year-old, first-generation Chesapeake Bay waterman that began crabbing at the age of age 12 and started his own crabbing business at age 18. In the past two years, Luke has started using social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to take his small business to the next level.

He oversees all aspects of the Farm, Market and Cidery, he is eager to extend the success of the two businesses. Tyler and his siblings purchased Doc Waters Cidery from their aunt and uncle in January of 2022. Tyler enjoys educating the local community about agriculture and has a passion for providing great customer service. Cory Moore is the CEO and Co-Owner of The Gift and The Garden International. He spent over 20 years in the fitness and wellness industry before starting The Gift. Cory led franchise operations for Gold’s Gyms and had a proven record of operational success. After injuring his sciatic nerve in 2018, his partner Liz created a homeopathic hemp balm which became their first product after it got Cory off the ground and back to health. Since then, they have opened a plant-based manufacturing center where they craft body and wellness products using clean ingredients and focus on educating their customers about the benefits of whole plant products and natural wellness. Today their manufacturing center is also home to a specialty mushroom farm, The Garden International where they plan to include value-added mushroom products to their plant-based manufacturing system. Elizabeth (Liz) Robinson is the COO and Co-Owner of The Garden International and The Gift. Liz spent 20+ years in accounting, finance, and business administration before starting The Gift in 2018 with her partner Cory. She was a former auditor for a public accounting firm, auditing the Army and large nonprofits and later became a finance manager for Marriott Corporate Headquarters. Liz’s experience of healing herself from her illnesses using plant medicine led her to her purpose and true passion which is harmonizing with nature for the good of all. She loves to create new products that simplify the ingredients of items that we use every day and provide more people with a direct connection to nature. Liz uses that passion every day with The Garden and The Gift.

Laura Armstrong is the Director of the Sustainability Program at the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). She promotes sustainable business practices through technical assistance programs, demonstration projects and recognition programs. She also manages the Maryland Green Registry, a voluntary program of 600 businesses and organizations throughout the state that encourages members to share their environmental best practices through online member profiles.

Braeden Bumpers is the co-founder and head distiller for McClintock Distilling Company in Frederick Maryland. He is on the board for the Maryland Distillers Guild and serves as the chair of the sustainability committee for the American Distilling Institute. He distills organic certified gins, whiskies, vodkas and specialty spirits at their distillery and has spearheaded many sustainability initiatives at his distillery. He has won numerous international awards for his spirits including Best Gin in Competition at the International Spirits Competition and Double Gold for Rye and Bourbon at the World Spirits Competition.

Helen Norman ( Elmore ) and her husband Mark Elmore own 130-acre Star Bright Farm in White hall, MD. Helen is a Maryland native, growing up riding her horses in the rolling countryside of Baltimore County. After earning a bachelor of art in photography from Syracuse University, she began a career in Photography beginning in fashion. She is currently still a commercial photographer, working for the last 20 years primarily for home, garden and lifestyle magazines like Martha Stewart Living, Garden and Gun, Southern Living, Country Home and many more. Helen has also been the photographer for 9 books for some renowned garden, floral and interior designers and chefs. She and Mark bought Star Bright Farm in 1994 to raise their boys, Peter and Patrick, and to provide more land for her brother ( One Straw Farm) to grow on. In 2017 when son Peter decided he wanted to farm ( after earning a degree in regenerative ag at UVM) the family decided to begin their herbal farming and Value Added production on the farm. Helen is currently the Star Bright Farm business manager and is in charge of many of the value-added products that the farm sells, as well as much of the marketing and photography.

Prior to joining CAIC, he was part of the founding team of Coops to Co-ops, a farmers’ market in Princess Anne MD that just ended its third season. Emiliano currently runs the Business Growth Program for Value-Added Producers. He assists 8 business owners understand their readiness to scale by providing the tools they need to assess, plan, and execute a growth and scaling strategy for their business.

Neith is the urban agriculture Extension Educator for Baltimore City. She has served in this role since 2016, helping urban farmers learn what they need to better achieve their goals through one-on-one technical assistance, workshops, field days, written resources, and applied research. Prior to this position, Neith worked as an agricultural Extension Educator for Dakota County, Minnesota and as Assistant Grower at Hampshire College Farm Neith earned an M.S. from Cornell University in Soil and Crop Sciences and a B.A. from the College of the Atlantic in Human Ecology.

Kurt is responsible for the strategic leadership of Horizon Farm Credit’s External Affairs Department. Farmer, Shlagel Farms
Karl farms with his father and 2 younger brothers on their diversified Maryland century farm. Their primary focus is fruit and vegetable production with an emphasis on plasticulture strawberries. In addition, they raise grain, hay, and beef cattle for freezer beef. They market these through wholesale, retail, PYO, and reclamation channels.

Founder, Emily’s Produce
Emily Jackson is a 7th-generation farmer who grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in her family farm market business. This farm market operation, named Emily’s Produce, began as a small roadside tent with a few homegrown vegetables and a self-serve money box in 1999. Over the 23 years of operation, Emily’s Produce has grown into a full agri-tourism destination that welcomes visitors from all around the country, while still holding those personal small-town values to heart. This upbringing in the agricultural community influenced Emily’s dreams for the future and started her on a path where the end goal would be managing Emily’s Produce full time. In 2016 she began pursuing her degree at Delaware Valley University.
During her time in college, she worked for numerous different farm production and farm market businesses, attended conferences such as the Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention and the North American Farm Marketing Association, and worked as an intern for farm markets as far west as Oregon. Once she graduated in 2020 with a degree in Agribusiness and a concentration in Horticulture and Crop Science, she returned home to Emily’s Produce where she began working her way to her current position of Business Operations Manager.
When she is not working at Emily’s Produce, she works as an Ag Lab Teacher for the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation and as a part-time teacher’s aid for Saints Peter and Paul. As she continues on her path of managing Emily’s Produce, Emily also hopes to work with organizations to increase public awareness of the importance of agriculture, whether it is aimed toward young children or adult consumers.

Shelby Watson-Hampton is the Director of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC), a farmer, and an active member of the agricultural community. Shelby also freelances for several regional and national agricultural publications, including the Lancaster Farming Newspaper and American Agriculturist.

Executive Director, Southern Maryland Heritage Area
Lucille W. Walker has been the Executive Director of the Southern Maryland Heritage Area (also known as Destination Southern Maryland) for the past 7 years. She is a Chair and legislative lead for the Maryland Heritage Areas Coalition, and Vice-Chair of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC). She serves on a number of statewide commissions, boards, and steering committees, including the Historic St. Mary’s City Commission and the Advisory Council for the Mallows Bay-Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary.
Ms. Walker is spearheading the effort for the Southern Maryland Heritage Area (a state-based heritage area) to become the 56 th National Heritage Area in the United States. Legislation was introduced into the U.S. Congress by Senator Ben Cardin and Congressman Steny Hoyer, with the support of Senator Chris Van Hollen. The legislation has passed the U.S. House of Representatives and is pending a vote in the U.S. Senate. This designation will raise the national and international profile of the region.
Additionally, the Southern Maryland Heritage Area has created the Maryland Rediscovery 400 initiative, with the purpose of telling a more complete history of Maryland and its beginnings, with a focus on descendant populations, African Americans, and First Peoples, as Maryland looks ahead to the 400th Commemoration. Ms. Walker is also serving on the Fort to 400 State Commission.
Lucille Walker received her undergraduate degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, followed by graduate studies at Oxford University. She received her Master’s degree in Liberal Arts from St. John’s College, Annapolis. She is the recipient of the 2022 Visionary Impact Award from the Maryland Tourism Coalition.

Brewmaster, Lone Oak Farm Brewing Co.
Kevin Hilton is a Silver Spring, Maryland native that has worked in several breweries in the Mid-Atlantic and South for the past ten years. Prior to returning to Maryland, he was brewmaster for a 300-acre farm brewery in Georgia, specializing in grain and small fruit production. Working closely with the Georgia Grown organization, he connected farmers with brewers and distillers in an effort to promote both industries throughout the state.

Kelly has spent over a decade working in either agricultural policy, land preservation or local food systems work. She was Howard County’s first Food Policy Director, making huge strides from food and farmers. Before that, she was the Executive Director of the Maryland Agricultural Resource Council and prior to that Kelly served as Director of Rural Lands at 1000 Friends of Maryland, where she administered the Keep Farmers Farming campaign, as well as the Partners for Open Space coalition. She has also worked for the Ohio Department of Agriculture and Baltimore County’s Agricultural Land Preservation Program. In addition to serving on the Rural Legacy Advisory Board, the Partners for Open Space Executive Committee, and the Maryland Food Policy Blueprint Advisory Committee, Kelly is also a LEAD Class VII alumni and the current chair of the Maryland Ag Commission.

Kevin founded Cultivate & Craft to support entrepreneurs and organizations as he has for the Maryland Wineries Association as its executive director since 2003. Kevin started out writing press articles for the wine industry, but soon grew the organization with new events, promotional programs, government affairs initiatives and more. He serves on the University of Maryland College of Agriculture’s Global Leadership Council and on the board of Future Harvest, is past chair of the Maryland Tourism Coalition, past president of the Maryland Agricultural Resource Council, and past chair of the WineAmerica State & Regional Associations Advisory Council. Kevin holds a masters in environmental journalism from CU-Boulder, a doctorate in communications design from the University of Baltimore, and a bachelor’s in journalism and music composition from Loyola University, where he teaches book publishing.

Food, farms and economic development have been Janna’s passions since the early 2000s. She most recently worked for the USDA National Organic Program’s Accreditation and International Activities Division, where she conducted auditing and accreditation activities related to organic certifiers and international partners.
Prior to that, Janna was the Agricultural Marketing Specialist at the University of Maryland Extension, Prince George’s County. In that capacity, she also served on the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission Board, the Southern Maryland Meats Steering Committee, and the Prince George’s County Food Equity Council. Janna is also a LEAD Maryland Class VII alumni. Prior to the Extension position, she was the Marketing & Outreach Manager for FreshFarm Markets, where she managed four Maryland farmers markets, developed community-level partnerships, conducted farm visits and helped increase farmers’ visibility.
Janna also spent three years at the Center for a Livable Future at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, working on public health nutrition campaigns. She received a master’s degree from the Department of Nutrition, Food Studies & Public Health at New York University, with an emphasis on the environmental and social impacts of food production systems.

Craft beer, local agriculture, and community engagement have all shaped Jim’s career and personal interests for more than a decade. Jim’s former role as Sales and Marketing Director at Monocacy Brewing Company in Frederick afforded him the opportunity to work directly with many Maryland craft beverage producers and farmers. Working in partnership with Maryland’s first modern malting business at Amber Fields Malting and Brewing, Jim has witnessed the potential for farmers with a focus on value-added agricultural business models. For several years Jim served as a committee member and Chairman for committees within the Brewers Association of Maryland and held the position of Secretary for Frederick Beer Week. Jim currently plays an active role in neighborhood revitalization and advocacy in Frederick’s South Market Corridor Community Association. An alumnus of Towson University, Jim graduated from the College of Business & Economics with a bachelor’s degree in International Business.
