Maryland Craft Beverages App Awarded At 40th Annual Maryland Tourism Summit

Free app gains recognition as this year’s best Maryland tourism product.

(ANNAPOLIS, MD) – The Maryland Tourism Coalition recognized the Maryland Craft Beverages App as the best new Large Marketing Product or Event for 2021. Released by Cultivate & Craft in July of this year, the Maryland Craft Beverages App is a free application for Android and iOS devices. The app allows craft alcohol consumers to track their exploration of Maryland’s breweries, cideries, distilleries, meaderies, and wineries.

“We’re honored to receive this recognition from the Maryland Tourism Coalition,” says Kevin Atticks, CEO of Cultivate & Craft. “Our app makes it easy for people traveling around Maryland to learn about the state’s beverage alcohol producers, on-demand.”

The Maryland Craft Beverages App is a flagship product guiding residents and visitors to nearly 200 craft alcohol producers located throughout the state. This app highlights locations, allows users to map itineraries and collects trails for the craft beverage industry in one, easy-to-use package. Developed in partnership with the Brewers Association of Maryland, the Maryland Distillers Guild, and the Maryland Wineries Association, each tasting room featured in the app is a current member of their respective trade association.

“This app is a powerful tool for the industry and for our users,” says Jim Bauckman, Director of Communications at Cultivate & Craft. “Using the app, fans of locally produced beverages are visiting more local tasting rooms and spending more money within Maryland communities.”

The Maryland Craft Beverage App was developed by Daruma Tech and made possible by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service through grant #AM200100XXXXG050. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the USDA. Maryland Brewers & Distillers Cheer Governor Hogan’s Order Authorizing Direct Shipping

(ANNAPOLIS, MD)–The Brewers Association of Maryland, Maryland Distillers Guild, and Maryland Wineries Association thank Governor Hogan & Comptroller Franchot for authorizing direct-to-consumer shipments of Maryland beer and spirits. 

“In these times of fast-changing consumer preferences, this authorization allows members ultimate flexibility when marketing and selling their products,” said Sarah Healey, president of the Brewers Association of Maryland, and manager of Milkhouse Brewery in Mt. Airy.

Since the crisis began, the primary sales channels for brewers, distillers, and wineries (on-site visits and wholesale) have largely dried up. Curbside and delivery were brand-new sales channels but were limited by a customer’s proximity to the producer. Wineries had a tool giving them an advantage over breweries and distillers: direct shipping.

Jaime Windon, president of the Maryland Distillers Guild and producer of Lyon Rum in St. Michaels, has heard the value of shipping from her peers nationwide but has also felt it from her customers. “Demand for shipment has been intense, and this order allows the industry to be nimble and meet the market where it has evolved,” said Windon. “This is a new lifeline for sales.”

Maryland residents are utilizing home delivery and shipping services more than ever during this time. Neighboring states have proven that this serves to satisfy consumer demand while being regulated to ensure compliance with all alcohol service and delivery rules. 

Judy Crow, co-owner of Crow Vineyards in Kennedyville and president of the Maryland Wineries Association, noted that wineries have been shipping since 2011. “The industry supports this announcement and is grateful for Governor Hogan’s thoughtful and steady leadership to support the craft alcohol industry,” said Crow.

The state’s alcohol producer industry supports over 29,5000 jobs, and over $3.5 billion in economic activity annually, according to an economic study on Value-Added Agriculture by Cultivate & Craft and BEACON. The Governor’s announcement directly impacts the supply-chain of Maryland grown and processed raw materials that are used in the production of craft beer, wine, and spirits.

Atticks Elected to Maryland Tourism Coalition Board

Founder of Cultivate & Craft, Kevin Atticks, was recently elected to the Maryland Tourism Coalition (MTC) Board of Directors. MTC works to grow and support tourism throughout Maryland. Atticks is a recent past president of the organization, and after a brief hiatus from the organization he was nominated to serve another term.
“MTC is pleased to welcome Kevin Atticks back on the board,” says the organization’s executive director, Ruth Toomey. “As MTC continues to grow across the state and prepares for the 2020 legislative session, his insightfulness will be an asset to the MTC Board.”
The organization advocates for tourism-related causes, and recently took a strong stance in favor or Maryland’s beer reform legislation and increasing the state’s tourism promotion budget.
“MTC is an incredible organization which plays a critical role in supporting the state’s tourism industry,” says Atticks. “Without the revenue generated by the industry, every Marylander would pay an additional $1,100 in taxes annually.”
